HUMALOG (INSULIN LISPRO)

The concentration of insulin lispro in the injectable solution Insulin Humalog is 100 units/ml.

The main action of the drug is the regulation of glucose metabolism. In addition, it has an anabolic effect.

In patients with diabetes mellitus types 1 and 2, with the use of Humalog insulin lispro, hyperglycemia that occurs after meals is significantly reduced in comparison with soluble human insulin. For patients on basal and short-acting insulin, the dose of both short- and long-acting insulin must be adjusted to achieve optimal blood glucose levels throughout the day.

Indications

Diabetes mellitus in adults and children requires insulin therapy to maintain normal blood sugar levels.

Dosage

The doctor determines the dose individually, depending on the patient’s needs. It also depends on his/her diet, physical activity, and lifestyle. Humalog can be administered shortly before a meal, if necessary – immediately after a meal.

Humalog is administered subcutaneously in the form of injections or as an extended subcutaneous infusion using an insulin pump. If necessary (ketoacidosis, acute diseases, the period between operations, or the postoperative period), Humalog can be administered intravenously.

Humalog insulin lispro injection should be administered into the shoulder, thigh, buttocks, or abdomen. The injection sites should be alternated in such a way that the same site is used no more than once a month. With subcutaneous administration of the drug Humalog®, care must be taken to avoid getting the drug into the blood vessel. After the procedure, do not massage the site of the injection.

Administration of the Drug Humalog

The solution of the drug Humalog must be transparent and colourless. Do not use a cloudy, thickened, or weakly coloured solution of the drug or if solid particles are visually detected in it.

Intravenous injection of the drug Humalog should be carried out in accordance with normal clinical practice for intravenous administration with infusion pump, for example, intravenous bolus administration or using an infusion system. This requires frequent monitoring of blood glucose levels.

Preparation and administration

1. Wash your hands.
2. Choose a site for injection.
3. Treat the skin at the site of administration with an antiseptic.
4. Remove the cap from the needle.
5. Secure the skin by pulling it or pinching a large fold. Insert the needle in accordance with the instructions for use of the syringe pen.
6. Perform the injection.
7. Remove the needle and gently press the injection site for a few seconds. Do not rub.
8. Using the needle shield, unscrew the needle and discard it.
9. The injection sites should be changed so that the same site is used no more than about 1 time per month.

Side Effects of Humalog

A side effect associated with the common side effects of the drug is hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). Severe hypoglycemia can lead to loss of consciousness (hypoglycemic coma) and, in exceptional cases, death.

Allergic reaction: local allergic reactions are possible – redness, swelling, or itching (usually disappear within a few days or weeks); systemic allergic reactions (occur less often, but are more serious) – generalized itching, urticaria, angioedema, fever, shortness of breath, decreased blood pressure, tachycardia, increased sweating. Severe cases of systemic allergic reactions can be life-threatening.

Local reactions: lipodystrophy.
